IBAN
IBAN or International Bank Account Numbers are standard across Europe. An IBAN will contain the following;
- 2 digit country code e.g. GB (United Kingdom) or CH (Switzerland)
- A 2 digit numerical check digit. E.g. 61
- An up to30 character Basic Bank Account Number - which can include the bank name and routing information as well as the individual bank account number.
If you need to look up an IBAN it is often found on the Bank Statement. We also have a list of IBAN generators issued by the Banks. See IBAN Generators
*Note - Not to be confused with SWIFT number or SWIFTBIC, which identifies a specific Financial Institution for standardised messages and payments between Financial Institutions. Both SWIFT and IBAN numbers are often requested for payments.
